Ray White Canberra's auction ace Alec Brown on show
For Alec Brown, it was another year, another chance to flex his auctioneering muscle at the Australasian Auctioneering Championships (AUSTROS).
This is his sixth year as a finalist in the Australasian Auctioneering Championships (AUSTROS) an annual event representing the most skilled and professional auctioneers that Australia and New Zealand has to offer.
Conducted jointly by the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) and the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ), the championships have become the most prestigious event on the Australasian auctioneering calendar.
“I’ve been involved in the competition scene for nine years now. It’s had its ups and downs but every time it’s taught me something new and I really value the experience and skills it has given me,” he said.
Alec, who has been in the industry for 14 years now and approaching six years with the leading group, said he always wanted to call auctions.
“I just didn’t get around to it until I was in my 30s. It’s a bit different from when I was running my floor and wall tiling business, I only wish I had started sooner!”
“I’ve been calling auctions for almost 13 years now - it was one of the biggest things that drew me to the industry,” he said.
“Watching from the sidelines was never enough, I knew it was something I could do and hopefully do it well.
“I’ve called a little over 1650 auctions now, though more like 5000 practice auctions!
“It’s never been my full time gig, as listing and selling remains the focus but it’s got to be the best part of the job.
“There’s so many memorable calls over the years but the most amazing would have to be the whole lockdown scenario during COVID - to have up to 20 team members all remotely online working collectively with as many bidders on the phone was exceptional to be a part of.”
