In the realm of property management, where the focus often lies on maintenance, rent collection, and client relations, there exists a lesser-known yet profoundly impactful avenue: working with charity organisations.

Head of Department Sharon Burke at Ray White Keevers Group, located in the popular northern coastal suburbs of Perth, proudly talks about their office playing a pivotal role in supporting the Red Cross by providing essential spaces for those being supported by the organisation.

Sharon, a dedicated property manager with a passion for community outreach first started working with the Red Cross in the 1990s.

“With a portfolio of properties under our care, we recognised the untapped potential to make a difference and were motivated by a desire to create a positive social impact,” she said.

The Red Cross tenants are new arrivals to Australia and are guided and backed by the Red Cross throughout their first tenancy in their new country. Guidance includes orientation sessions and learnings on expectations when renting in Western Australia. Overcoming cultural barriers are made easier for tenants, landlords and property managers due to the ongoing support from the Red Cross.

Sharon recently played a key role in securing a home for a large family. At first the landlords were sceptical of the tenancy, but with Sharon’s expertise, professionalism and guidance, the landlord quickly agreed to working alongside the Red Cross.

The Ray White Keevers Group has now assisted seven families in Perth this year, into suitable properties with the landlords expressing their gratitude for not only minimising vacancy times but for providing the opportunity to these families.

Asked if she recommends other property managers to work with the Red Cross or similar organisations, Sharon responded with a resounding “yes”.

“The opportunity to do this provides my clients and our team the satisfaction of creating meaningful change beyond the realms of day to day property management,” she said.

Advice to property managers

Australian Red Cross pay the rent for a 12 month lease, complete their own inspections separately to us, and have a handyman on call if any issues occur. Their clients are also put through three different classes on renting in Australia. They assist their clients throughout the whole tenancy. They are very open to us property managers giving feedback or asking questions throughout the tenancy.

Advice to tenants

If interested, tenants can get involved in many volunteering programs through Australian Red Cross. For those who are currently at risk, Australian Red Cross have a number of programs available to help support you in Metropolitan Perth. Please call 08 9225 8844 to learn more.

Advice to homeowners

It not only widens your contacts offering them this alternative approach, but I have found they are also surprised that they could make a difference to families less fortunate.
