"As a Ray White Property Manager, I am committed to helping new migrants in Melbourne. Many years ago, my family came to Australia under tough circumstances. They did not have the support network that AMES Australia now provides.

AMES Australia provides English training, employment services, community engagement and settlement support to migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.

My family relied on the kindness of strangers and the strength of our community to help navigate a new and unfamiliar country.

Recently, we have had many families settling in homes in which we have secured for them. I had the honour of welcoming the lovely Ahmadi family to their new home. Like many others, they had fled the violence in Afghanistan, seeking safety and a fresh start in Australia.

When they arrived at their new house, I could see the mix of relief and worry in their eyes. I guided them through the basics of their new home - how to use the appliances, where the nearest grocery stores were, and how to get around the neighbourhood. The children, initially shy, soon began exploring their new surroundings, their laughter a hopeful sign of new beginnings.

Mr Ahmadi shared parts of their difficult journey, the daily fear they had endured, and their hopes for a new life here. His words touched me deeply, reminding me of my parents' stories of strength and hope.

With AMES Australia we are working hard to expand these efforts, making sure every family has the chance to thrive in their new home. For those of us who have faced the challenges of moving to a new country without the support systems that exist today, helping others on this journey is very rewarding. It is a way to honour our own past and contribute to a kinder and more inclusive future.

In the quiet moments after welcoming the Ahmadi family, I feel a deep sense of fulfilment. This is more than just providing a roof over their heads; it is about offering hope, security, and a chance for a new beginning. As Melbourne continues to welcome those in need, I am reminded of the power of community and the difference I can make."

How does the process work?

The process is quite simple - we have an affiliation or connection with a support worker in AMES. They have branches all around Melbourne in which offices can reach out to. There are similar organisations for other states.

What is your advice to other property managers and rental providers?

My advice to landlords about housing refugees is that most renters are so gracious and humbled that you have opened up your home to them that they treat it with utmost respect. You will be part of their first memories of bringing up their family in Australia and they will cherish this for a lifetime. For the last 12 years that I have been with the Ray White group, I have had refugees through AMES become renters to homeowners to rental providers. It really is truly wonderful to see how these families progress and make Australia their home
